Gary Beals, Numismatist

Gary began collecting at age 14, and at 16 in 1960 he traveled alone to Peru, Panama and Costa Rica in search of Spanish American coins. It was numismatics that led him to writing. He received his degree in journalism in 1966 from San Diego State University, the same year he produced Numismatic Terms of Spain & Spanish America, a dictionary of coin terminology that is the ancestor of El Numiscadero.

He was a U.S. Air Force captain in Madrid and Zaragoza, Spain, 1969-1973. He returned to his home of San Diego, California and ran a marketing agency for 28 years. He has been a professional speaker and trainer since 1980. Gary returned to Spain in January, 2004 with his wife Maureen. They chose Segovia, site of an important mint, as their home.

He is a member of the American Numismatic Association, the Numismatic Bibliomania Society

and Amigos de la Casa de la Moneda de Segovia.

“It was amusing to see the last few of the 1,000 copies of my 1966 book Numismatic Terms of Spain & Spanish America selling on Amazon for 10 times its $6 original price!
